The End of a Chapter

Media closures are nothing new. Over the years, we’ve seen amazing titles come and go – Cookie, Cargo, and Shop, Etc. to name a few. This week, we learned that Details magazine will shutter next month. The news stinks – people are out of jobs, and it’s one less media outlet for publicist to pitch. It’s easy to get hung up on the closures.

But with every closure comes new opportunities. In many cases, when editors leave, they join a new publication or decide to create a new entity entirely – a blog, online magazine, etc. One of my favorite examples? Lonny magazine. If you’re unfamiliar with the outlet, it’s a digital shelter magazine that reaches 300K+ unique visitors per month. The outlet is the brainchild of former Domino magazine editor, Michelle Adams. She launched the blog after Domino first ceased publication. She developed Lonny after she was out of job and when she noticed a void in the market for great home and interior design content. Take one look at the publication and you’ll be thankful that she and her partner did – it’s brilliant, insightful and inspiring.

I’m not saying that closures are easy, and I can only imagine how hard it must be on the Details staff. My main point is that change often forces people to step out of their comfort zone and try new things.  The Details team is unbelievably talented. I hope they’ll embrace a new challenge, and until then, we’ll be waiting with anticipation.
